UPDATE: Man Holds Up Aldi Cashier at Gunpoint, Witness Says
Collingswood's Aldi was reportedly robbed on Friday afternoon. Initial reports of a second gunpoint robbery at Mt. Ephraim and Collings Aves. were incorrect.
Update, July 28, 2:35 p.m.: Police released surveillance video of the suspect on the hopes that someone can identify him.
A cashier at Collingswood’s Aldi store was reportedly held up at gunpoint Friday afternoon.
A man on the scene several minutes after the 2 p.m. robbery reported the information to Collingswood Patch. Collingswood Police did not immediately return a phone call seeking information.
The Collingswood man, who asked to remain anonymous, was at the store before police arrived and reported the cashier as “obviously very shaken, but unhurt.”
As police from Collingswood and Camden descended on the store, customers continued to shop. Several detectives and what appeared to be crime scene investigators joined the officers at the scene and collected surveillance camera footage, the witness said.
According to the witness, Aldi often has a uniformed, but unarmed, security guard stationed at the store’s exit. The guard was reportedly on scene, but not yet on duty, at the time of the robbery.
The White House Pike Aldi store sits on the border of Collingswood and Camden, with the Ferry Avenue speedline just a block away.
Meanwhile, Breaking News Network, a service that reports police news, published a report of a gunpoint robbery at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Collings and Mt. Ephraim avenues in Haddon Township. That site is just one mile from the Aldi store.**
In the incident, the male robber displayed a silver handgun and drove off in a green Jeep toward Fairview Street.
There are no other details available and it’s unclear if the two incidents are related.
**CORRECTION: Collingswood Police corrected the initial Breaking News Network report of a second robbert at the intersection of Collings and Mt. Ephraim Avenues. That report reflects a traffic stop that was made by Camden Police after the Aldi robbery was reported as authorities attempted to corral the suspect in that incident, and not a second robbery.
