Five Things for This Week: 9/17/12 to 9/23/12
From Cub Scouts to animal adoption, this week is full of some great activities from a number of community groups.
1. GMO Awareness Group Meeting
Thursday, Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. - 771 Haddon Ave.
Do you have concerns about genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) in your food? This awareness group might be for you. The first half of the meeting will screen the 48-minute documentary Deconstructing Supper—popcorn provided—and the remainder will be dedicated to discussion. Kids are welcome.
2. Cruise Night
Thursday, Sept. 20 – 5:30-9 p.m.
The penultimate Cruise Night of the season will be held this week. Come enjoy the display of classic cars and motorcycles along Haddon Ave. while you stroll along and take in the sights and sounds of the evening.
3. Cub Scout Round Up
Friday, Sept. 21 – 6-8 p.m. at the Collingswood Public Library
Cub Scout Pack 3001, sponsored by St. Paul’s Church of Collingswood, is recruiting new members. Boys in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to the informational session. Events for the upcoming calendar year include camping, archery, BB shooting, hiking, swimming, boating, and knot tying. Can’t make it Friday? The pack meets Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Church. Call Barbara Park at 856-981-4793 for more information.
4. Animal Adoption Center Dog Walk
Saturday, Sept. 22 - 8 a.m. at Cooper River Park
The no-kill Animal Adoption Center of Lindenwold is hosting its annual 5K dog walkathon and 1-mile fun walk at Cooper River Park. There is a “canine carnival” from 11 a.m. to 12 noon where pet owners can visit vendors and learn more about the shelter. Advance registration is required, and those who cannot make the event may still support it as a “virtual walker.” Call (856)-435-9116 for more details.
5. Kidzfest
Sunday, Sept. 23 - 11 a.m. at Challenge Grove Park in Cherry Hill
This fundraising event benefits pediatric heart disease research at Children's Hospital and Virtua Hospital. It's hosted by the non-profit Help Women and Children Now, and you can read more about last year's event here.
Five Things for This Week is a round-up of the events happening in the borough of Collingswood every week. To add your event to our calendar listing, have a look at our Patch 101 on Calendar Events.

Your Bonus Thing for the week: Wednesday is National Talk Like a Pirate Day, and Krispy Kreme is giving away doughnuts to celebrate. Go in there and talk like a pirate for a free glazed doughnut—or dress like a pirate for a free dozen.
