Collingswood Wrestler Wins Regional Championship

Moving up a weight class this season appears to be paying off for Collingswood grappler Tony Giancola.

Collingswood High School's Tony Giancola won his championship match at the Region 7 wrestling tournament Saturday, sending him to the state tournament next weekend in Atlantic City.

Senior Giancola beat Cherokee's Alex Baider in the 113-pound match, 11-1 in a major decision at Robbinsville High School.

Giancola had success last year in the 103-pound weight class, and found he needed to adjust his approach this season.

“You can’t really wrestle the same in different weight classes,” Giancola told Collingswood Patch earlier. “Last year when I moved down, I was bigger than most kids. If I got into a jam, I could kind of muscle my way out of it. This year at 113, I had to wrestle my way out. I had to adjust my mindset.

“But I want to win the whole thing again. That’s the goal,” he said.
