Clay Oven Palace Spices Up Haddon Ave.
Our Collingswood Foodies tell you why you need to check out the Clay Oven Palace, the borough's newest Indian restaurant.
Once considered exotic and maybe even unusual, Indian food is well on its way to becoming as commonplace as Chinese or sushi. With the addition of Clay Oven Palace, Collingswood now boasts three Indian restaurants, each with their own flavors and ambiance. Some have questioned whether the town needs another Indian spot. Our answer: absolutely! Let us tell you why.
We Collingswood Foodies love Indian food. When we moved to Collingswood from Philadelphia, we were distressed to leave behind our favorite restaurant Ekta, and our other normal curry spots. Friends told us about Collingswood’s IndeBlue, but after a few unpleasant experiences, we were left unsatisfied. When Indiya opened a few months ago, we almost jumped for joy. Indiya is a worthy restaurant in its own right (try the chicken lababdar), and we think that Clay Oven Palace is equally impressive. In fact, due to fantastic prices and authentic quality, it may have a leg up on the competition.
As part of a grand opening special, Clay Oven Palace is serving an all-you-can-eat dinner buffet for only $9.95. Normally this will only be offered at lunch, so hurry over within the next week to take advantage of the special. This is the perfect opportunity for those new to Indian cuisine to try out something new. We know many people (hi mom!) who are reluctant to give Indian dishes a try, but we promise it’s not as far-out as you may think. Sure, Indian food is heavily seasoned with foreign-sounding spices like cardamom, turmeric, coriander and cumin, but once you try them you will be stocking your pantry full of curry powder and garam masala. And while some of it has a kick, it’s not all spicy.
Taking full advantage of the large buffet, we tried a little of everything. The standout for Jessica was the eggplant curry. It was savory and a little sweet with the inclusion of sautéed onions and not hot at all. Jamie preferred the lamb and also chicken curries. Both meats were incredibly moist and flavorful.
Every Indian buffet includes chicken tikka masala or chicken makhani (somewhat similar dishes) as it is somewhat of the standard option for Americans and the UK. For those unfamiliar, it’s a thick tomato-based curry with a hint of cream served with chunks of white meat chicken that has been marinated in yogurt and spices and chicken cooked in a tandoor (clay) oven. Clay Oven Palace’s version had a bit of a kick to it, which we loved, but wonder if it might be too hot for the average South Jerseyan. Jessica has been dealing with a cold and it cleared her sinuses right out.
Another Indian buffet staple is tandoori chicken, the Indian version of barbecue. Whole chicken pieces are marinated as described above and cooked in the tandoor. Clay Oven Palace lives up to its name there. Out of all three Indian restaurants in Collingswood, as well as Cross Culture and Palace of Asia, Clay Oven Palace wins our imaginary award for best tandoori. On the regular menu, you can order a half or full tandoori chicken for $12 or $16 respectively, served with basmati rice smothered in curry sauce. We’ve bookmarked this for dinner next week!
Vegetarians will be happy to know that the chef is more than comfortable with meat-free dishes. In addition to the tasty eggplant, we tried a meatless “meatball” dish made from chick peas, cauliflower, peas, and carrots. Even though Jamie detests chick peas and will never eat a channa masala, he chowed down on the “meatball.”
Every dish we tried elicited a positive response. The food has a distinct homemade, authentic taste. The dishes weren’t too heavy or creamy, and packed with flavor. As we ate, we heard the other diners respond similarly. One man, upon leaving, commented that he would definitely be back soon while a nearby couple told the owner they were totally stuffed because they ate so much, which is always a good sign.
Speaking of the owner, we chatted with Sunila Joshi about why she decided to open the restaurant. She mentioned that her friends always commented on her cooking and requested Indian dishes for all their events. Even though she is not the restaurant chef, she feels that more and more people are opening up to Indian cuisine and her chef can meet the demand.
Why Collingswood? She echoes what most of us already know: Our town is friendly, active and we love to eat. Joshi and her staff seemed positively excited about the restaurant’s opening, and took the time to chat to patrons and recommend different dishes. That friendly energy added to the comfy atmosphere.
The only downside we see for Clay Oven Palace is the location. Farther down Haddon Ave., it’s a bit too far to walk to from downtown. Street parking can be off-putting, but Joshi assured us that it won’t be a problem. She’s going to talk to the commissioner to get the “15-minute parking” signs removed from out front, as they only applied when the spot used to be a convenience store. We hope the distance from town doesn’t dissuade people from giving them a shot, because they really are worth it.

Thank you for your review, and I am excited to try Clay Oven Palace, however the address is not listed in the article. So sorry you felt it necessary to slam IndeBlue to get your point across. I travel over 20 miles to many resturants in Collingswood, bringing friends and family. IndeBlue has been one of my favorites!

ML, On many Patch stories, there is a map on the right bar identifying the address. But it's not something everyone will notice -- I just added the address, phone number and hours. Thanks for reading!

Regarding IndeBlue, I don't think we slammed them - just offered our honest opinion.

I am very excited to try, it's only a few blocks from my house! I love Indian food, and I have also been disappointed several times at Inde Blue and haven't been back. Hopefully Clay Oven will be as good as Ekta and Tiffin!

I'll say that Tiffin and Ekta are a little heavier (more cream and tons of yummy spices) and Clay Oven is a little more homemade tasting. Both very good, just depends on what you're in the mood for!

I can't wait to try it also! I would stress that not being in the middle of "downtown" is a positive, especially if parking will be easier for those who are coming from out of town.

Good point! Added bonus, you can smell all the delicious spices a block away as you walk from the car to the restaurant.

Mr and Mrs Blanchard, I reached out to you over 2 years ago concerning your experience with a take out order that was not spicy enough and a complaint you had about not being able to be seated without a reservation on a busy weekend night. Most of our business is reservations, though we also take walk ins and try to seat anyone if we physically can. Rakesh, my husband and chef at Indeblue was a chef at Tiffin for a short time right before we opened in Collingswood. This is what the owner of Tiffin, Munish Narula, had to say about Rakesh and IndeBlue on Philly.com:
My other favorite in South Jersey is IndeBlue, the only Indian restaurant in the region recommended to me by Narula that he didn't own. Unsurprisingly, IndeBlue chef Rakesh Ramola originally worked at Tiffin.
IndeBlue's menu is similar to many other Indian restaurants, but Ramola's skill and his use of fresh ingredients brings it a level above the usual takeout fare. The elegantly spiced lamb dakshini is memorable, as is his baingan bharta, or smoked eggplant in tomato/onion sauce.
Narula said he admired Ramola for having similar ambitions about Indian cooking. "We need more people like him to elevate the food," Narula said, "to show that Indian food can be nice and it can be contemporary."

Hi Heather, I wish you guys all the best and I see you're opening a restaurant in Philly. I hope it does well. Regardless of our personal preferences, we always want to see non-chain restaurants succeed. You have a great fan base, it's just not our style. We have no hard feelings.

indeBlue is SO overrated. Tried a few times and was underwhelmed. I think people were so excited to have a non-Italian restaurant that they lowered their standards heheh

Ms. Brodzik,
I apologize that your experience at Indeblue was disappointing. We want everyone to leave our restaurant satisfied. Please email me at heather_ramola@hotmail.com and give us a chance to correct what disappointed you. We, as with most business owners want our customers to be happy and given the chance, are more than willing to correct any problem you may have had.
Mr. and Mrs. Blanchard,
Your disparaging internet comments are unnecessary. You have other choices, we understand if you don't care to eat at our restaurant but for some reason you and your husband continue to disparage our business for the past 3 years on various internet sites. What can we possibly do for you? Refund your money for the take out you didn't care for 2-3 years ago? Please let me know via private email. If there is nothing we can do then I apologize again. Why wouldn't you be open to either accepting our apology or just not patronizing our establishment? What makes you and your husband so angry at us that you have to disparage us? Your editor Matt has eaten at our restaurant. I spent time at his table and spoke to them. Matt can attest that I made sure they were comfortable and enjoyed their experience as I do with all of our customers. We are not perfect but we certainly try. Congratulations on the birth of your child, I read your post on getting ready for your 1st baby and thought it was great! We have 3 daughters, having children changes your life for sure but its so rewarding......

Gotta question the judgement of anyone who so curtly dismisses my favorite restaurant, IndeBlue.
I'm also unimpressed with the poor quality of the photos associated with this article. The images are shoddy resolution, poorly composed and improperly lit. They do not flatter the subject matter whatsoever.... here's a tip guys: Instagram+iPhone. It's, like, amazing what a little app magic can do.

I like the fact that new Indian places are opening up but I feel the need to defend IndeBlue as well. We go there often and always find it busy, even on certain weeknights. We find the prices fair and the service exceptional. Heather is always personable and stops at every table to make sure each guest is attended to. Their may have been one or two times we were unable to get a reservation but that was no fault of the workers. The space is not huge and the weekends seem to bring in people from outside the area. Parking is tight at times but we always manage. The selections at IndeBlue are often unique to many other places and have a distinct fusion element that you don't find anywhere. I just think their is room for all of the Indian places as much as the Italian ones and wish all parties the best.

I love Indian and have tried all three of our restaurants. They will all continue to receive my patronage because they are all uniquely delicious and offer different services that I can take advantage of. Indiya is the only in town and I would always go there if I was down on the Ave. IndeBlue is the only that has delivery which is something I take advantage of often. Clay Oven is nearly around the corner, and the buffet lunch is fantastic. They're all winners for different reasons and I have never been disappointed. Good luck and wishes for a prosperous future to all.

There is room for 3 Indian restaurants in Collingswood for sure. I'm happy at all of the options we have now (as opposed to 3 years ago when there was just Inde Blue). That said Inde Blue continues to be a favorite of my husband and myself - The Drums of Heaven (if they are still called that) are heavenly! We will frequent all three Indian restaurants equally (although the Clay Oven Palace is in a convenient location for us).

Definitely got to defend IndeBlue here. It's been a long time favorite of my family and me and we continue to frequent there for many family occasions! I think it's nice that Indian food is becoming more popular and I'm excited for these new owners, but the little thrown in disparage towards Indeblue seems a little rude and uncalled for!

I'm excited to try the Clay Oven Palace. That said, this has been a weird review, due primarily to the largely irrelevant critique of a competitor in the 2nd paragraph. Obviously, many other commentators noticed this as well, and the unintended consequence of the dis bestowed upon IndeBlue was that this page looks more like a vehement endorsement of I.B rather than a favorable review of C.O.P!
At any rate, we can't have too much Indian food. And,as long as this page is host to elaborate non-sequiturs, I gotta mention that EVERYONE needs to head out to Voorhees for some Indian/Pizza fusion at Bombay Local!
