Collingswood's Mike Campbell Wins District 28 Wrestling Title
Campbell plowed through the 160-pound weight class at the District 28 Wrestling Tournament.
Mike Campbell has wrestled in front of home fans dozens of times over his three years as a member of the Collingswood High School wrestling team. However, his performance at home on Saturday is one that will always hold a special meaning to him.
Campbell scored a 10-0 major decision victory over Audubon’s Devin McMonagle to capture a District 28 Wrestling Tournament title.
Campbell entered as the No. 1 seed in the 160-pound weight class and lived up to the billing. Campbell recorded a first-period pin over Kevin Stevens of Sterling in the quarterfinals, and followed with a second-period pin over Haddon Township’s Daniel Clemente in the semifinals. He faced little opposition in the finals, controlling his match against McMonagle.
There was a bit of disappointment for the Panthers in that Campbell was the only district champion. Alex Irwin (145) and John Deaner (220) were No. 1 seeds, but had to settle for second and third places in their respective weight classes. Their performances were, however, good enough to extend their seasons into next week's regionals.
The Panthers will have 10 wrestlers in total at regions. Joining the aforementioned threesome will be Donnie Daly (3rd, 120), Zane Chunko (3rd, 126), Colin Lex (3rd, 132), Shawn Clark (2nd, 138), Ayaz Ali (3rd, 152), Pat Miles (2nd, 195) and Billy Crowley (3rd, 182).
Check back on Tuesday to find out what seeds each of the local wrestlers earned for the Region 7 Wrestling Tournament.
CORRECTION, 9:25 p.m. Feb. 25: Patch omitted Bill Crowley from the wrestlers moving onto regions. Crowley won his third-place match at districts.

Great NEWS story! Congratulations to Mike Campbell's for his outstanding achievement! This is a confirmation that Collingswood School District really promotes their sports program! Now if they could promote education, even a fraction as much, perhaps student test scores could improve!!
It is a REAL embarrassment to look at the district website and see outdated "Educational Information" that is over two years old! One glaring example is the "Program of Studies" that dates to 2011!! Really, nothing has changed since Dr. Anderson retired?? The German Program "web site" could have been designed by a Kindergartener! Are the Technology, Math, Science and Computer Science Teachers incapable of showing off Collingswood High School students' accomplishments?
Where are the school district's priorities?? If sports accomplishments can be routinely highlighted in the press and Band Director Mr. Lerch can make up such a nice web site for the Band, why isn't it possible for every teacher to have a web site presenting outstanding student academics?? Or doesn't that exist?? Check out Camden's LEAP Academy's web site to get an example of what is possible!!

Here is the Leap Academy's site: http://www.leapacademycharter.org/ ...
It Highlights Academics: STEM Robotics Team Wins ... FURTHERMORE: ALL LEAP Academy teachers have UPDATED and professional looking web sites that can be viewed at: http://www.leapacademycharter.org/Faculty.html
Why can’t Collingswood emulate this? Collingswood School District should seek to not only promote their sports and entertainment programs but also, and at least equally, their academic areas as well.
Currently, the Collingswood district and the media promote an excellent sports program, however as demonstrated by the district's embarrassing web site and, by comparison, the insubstantial media reporting of academic achievement, the actual education of students is apparently just not the priority!
The story was about a wonderful achievement by Mike Campbell, but what rarely gets reported in Collingswood is also a story ... why don't student academic achievements get at least equal coverage in the press?? Google Collingswood School District and you will find most results are about sports and that is what needs to change.
You can likely find an embarrassing article about any school when you Google. The many articles about the treatment of the last Collingswood Basketball couch and the rude Collingswood Urban Dictionary definition come to mind.
Sorry if my opinions offended anyone's sports-centered sensibilities. But all that aside, Mike, congratulations on your great achievement!

If you are concerned about MEDIA coverage of the academic programs, ask the MEDIA...
I just looked at the Collingswood web site. It looks pretty updated to me. Perfect? No. But, better than most by far.
