The Camden County Superintendent of Elections office in Pennsauken lost electricity Tuesday morning as a result of Superstorm Sandy.

The power still had not been restored as of Thursday evening, but that wasn’t preventing employees there from ensuring next Tuesday’s election takes place.

“We can’t have an election without this office,” Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said. “They are hard at work, equipped with flashlights and a generator, to make sure that all residents get to exercise their right to vote next week.”

Camden County Superintendent of Elections Phyllis Pearl is anticipating the largest voter turnout since the last presidential election, when Barack Obama defeated John McCain, in 2008.

“In terms of voter participation, we are preparing for a big election Tuesday,” Pearl said. “My entire staff is here to make sure the process moves forward and we will work though the night and the weekend to ensure our residents vote.”

The superintendent of elections is responsible for overseeing and conducting elections, including ensuring that voting machines are delivered to Camden County’s more than 230 polling places. The superintendent also processes voter registrations and all changes of address, name or party affiliation.
